Foundation Scholars: transforming lives at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School.

Following from an annual appeal mailshot, a parent contacted the Foundation Office to inquire about offering a gift. Several discussions later, he and his wife had determined that they wanted to offer a bursary to allow a talented boy from a disadvantaged background to attend from 11+.  In order to ensure that this child had every benefit offered to the general student community, funding was offered to support all additional costs, from school meals and coach passes to uniforms, musical instruments and trips.  The donors were so pleased to make a difference in this way that they provided a gift of £350,000.

With this money, and with local knowledge kindly furnished by the University of Hertfordshire, we contacted the head teachers of the thirty local schools with the highest level of free school meals in our coaching route to find three boys who would match the criteria. These boys - who will remain anonymous until they are of an age to give consent - are flourishing at the school.

As news of the Foundation Scholar programme spread in the community, gifts started to emerge unprompted, including a donation of £200,000 from grandparents. A number of boys are now benefitting from this wonderful start in life, thanks to the articulation of a Case for Support that embraced the values of the institution and was shared with the community, that demonstrated to the donors the difference their philanthropy had made, and that gave the broader community a sense of pride and achievement.
